UTILIZATION of ICT

“i-Construction” is to improve the productivity of the entire construction system by actively utilizing ICT (Information and Communication Technology)

In the i-Construction, we are aiming for a radical production innovation in all construction processes, from survey, design, construction, inspection, maintenance and renewal, which are related to infrastructure development. Of these, in addition to productivity improvement at survey and design stage which are the main tasks of engineering consultants, deep consideration is required to facilitate the subsequent process from construction to maintenance and renewal.

As an i-Construction initiative, EJEC had been promoting BIM/CIM* such as 3D surveying and 3D designing on a site-by-site basis from earlier. In June 2017, we established the CIM Promotion Office and we are actively introducing BIM/CIM.

*BIM: Abbreviation for Building Information Modeling. Attribute data is added to the 3D model to make the construction process more efficient. CIM: Abbreviation for Construction Information Modeling/Management. The concept of BIM was introduced to civil engineering infrastructure construction. With the goal of “improving quality and productivity by creating new added value by utilizing BIM/CIM technology”, focusing on effectiveness in business, without being caught by BIM/CIM as specifications, we are working to develop and spread BIM/CIM technology.

For the first three years, we have accumulated experience and work record through implementation of BIM/CIM pilot projects led by the “CIM Promotion Office” and BIM/CIM utilization work. From FY2019, each business department which oversees actual work will play a main role in practical use and development of BIM/CIM. While various business departments are responsible on the projects, individual engineers proactively use 3D models and make ingenuity to achieve higher quality, more sophisticated communication, and higher productivity. In this way, we believe that the introduction of BIM/CIM is effective in establishing a new production system and is one of the elements that promote the “work style reform” that is a social requirement. Also, in order to positively and effectively utilize BIM/CIM, the acquisition technology of 3D spatial information is important. Therefore, we introduced a variety of 3D measuring devices including not only fixed point type but also mobile type, and it became possible to grasp spatial information in various situations on the ground, in the sky, and underwater. We will continue to promote BIM/CIM technology development and diffusion, aiming to solve problems in all infrastructure fields. Then, with the slogan of “Valuable environment for the future,” we will contribute to society as a true infrastructure and solution consultant who can solve research, planning, design, and maintenance with a one-stop service.

Introduction Movie

Example of visualization of facility plan: Layout plan of Sabo dam using 3D model. Presenting an easy-to-understand image of the current situation to planned situation by BIM/CIM technology.

Earthwork study example: Comparison study of excavation area when constructing a dam using a 3D model. BIM/CIM technology enables 3D accurate excavation study.

Study example of construction/temporary plan: Comparison study of construction road plan and cableway plan. Using BIM/CIM technology, it is effective in considering separation from surrounding facilities.
