Bougainville is the eastern-most island of Independent State of Papua New Guinea and is a volcanic island with a land area of 10,000 km2 and a population of some 180,000. The establishment of the Autonomous Bougainville Government after a long war for independence finally stabilized the political and security situation but major infrastructure had been severely damaged by the war, making its rehabilitation an urgent requirement for reconstruction for production and economic activities.
\r\nThe coastal trunk road on Bougainville Island runs along the island\u2019s north-eastern coast for some 190 km. There are 19 sites along the route where the crossing of a shallow ford is necessary. The work involved the detailed design of a bridge and construction work supervision at 15 such sites. The work constituted the construction phase of Japan\u2019s Grant Aid Cooperation following JICA\u2019s Basic Design Study for the Bridge Construction Project along the Coastal Trunk Road in Bougainville and was conducted through a joint venture with Chodai Co., Ltd.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
